Daniel Williams answered on 8 Nov 2017:

Gravitational waves give us a completely new way to observe the universe. Until 2015 we’d only seen things using different forms of electromagnetic radiation, like light, radio waves, and x-rays. Matter can block those (just like the way things block light to make shadows) and make it hard to see the inside things, like supernovae, the explosions that happen at the end of a star’s life, and things which don’t make light, like collisions between black holes.
