There starts of with a bunch of gas and dust, eventually some will clump together. This creates a small gravitational pull attracting more gas and dust. Eventually the pressure of all the material in this ball of gas and dust starts to heats up the ball. This makes a protostar, sometimes these are bright enough to see but usually we can’t. After the ball eats up even more material it will have so much pressure due to gravity that the elements will start to fuse together! This is when a star is born. The initial force due to the start of fusion pushes all of the remaining material out into a disk, in that disk planets can form!

      Great question!
